Photography Class for 2008

I will be teaching a class in "Travel & Vacation Photography" this fall, for the Cass Career Center (Harrisonville, MO). Classes are scheduled for October 15, October 22 and October 29. The objective of this class is to enable the student to produce more dramatic images. These classes are 2 hours per night and will cover such topics as Exposure, Light, Composition, Traveling with Equipment, etc. The class is an entry level class with the only requirement being that the student knows how to operate his/her camera. There are limited openings for this class (not yet open for enrollment, but I will add the information here, when available). Hope to see you there!

Planned Photographic "shoots" for 2008

  • Yellowstone in Winter - I'll be visiting this exciting place in the heart of winter.  The focus of our trip will be wildlife in the Lamar Valley, including wolves, elk and bison.

  • Wildlife in the Montana Rockies (winter) - This trip's focus will be wildlife in winter settings.  Photography of several species of wildlife from the Triple D Game Farm will be the focus. Wildlife will include wolves, several species of cats, and several small mammals.

  • Missouri Prairie Chickens (March-April).  I will again be one of the guides for viewing of the endangered Greater Prairie Chickens at Dunn Ranch, a 3,700 acre prairie land owned by The Nature Conservancy in rural Harrison County, MO. During my free time, I will be photographing this endangered bird as the males strut about and "boom" on their mating grounds ("leks"), attracting hens.

  • Wildlife of the Great Plains (summer) - I'll be visiting the wonderfully scenic Wichita Mountains   to photograph wildflowers, scenics and the abundant wildlife of the area, including prairie dogs, elk, bison, burrowing owls, and Eastern collared lizards.

  • Orca "Killer" Whales (fall) - This trip will involve cruising the still waters of British Columbia, aboard a 50-foot custom trawler, following the Orcas as they travel about the area. Also on board this trip will be some Orca whale researchers from the University of California-Davis, so we will have some real whale experts with us! Should help to get us in position for some really nice images. We will also immerse ourselves in the richness of this ancient land, exploring some abandoned villages, totem parks and who knows what else!

  • Rocky Mountain National Park (fall).  I will again photograph the elk that are so prevalent in this area. The fall is an excellent time to photograph these creatures as the bulls round up their harems, via the infamous "bugling". What a sight to behold!

  • Eagles of the Chilkat (winter). I will once again travel to Haines, Alaska to spend a week photographing the bald eagles that return to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve to feed upon a late salmon run. The eagle counts here range from 3,500 to 5,000 along a 3.5 mile stretch of the Chilkat River. Photographing here is a photographer's dream-come-true!

Projects for 2008

  • Set up a rotating display of prints that will be placed in area businesses, to help promote my photography business.
  • Set up an advisory board to assist me in getting my photography business going.
  • Write a photography book.
  • Conduct a class in travel & vacation photography.
  • Prepare 2009 "Alaska Wildlife" calendar.
  • Submit images for magazines, travel brochures, calendars, etc.
  • Upgrade this website.  I've already made some improvements, but much more restructuring of this site will occur ... stay tuned!
